Product Description

After surviving the perils of Egypt, Peregrine Dalmay, Earl of Lisle, is back in London, facing the most dire threat of all: his irrational family . . . and Miss Olivia Wingate-Carsington. A descendant of notorious—but very aristocratic—swindlers, the delectable redhead has the ability to completely unhinge him and a long history of dragging him into her scandalous schemes.

Olivia may be Society's darling, but she's aware a respectable future looms menacingly. And so when Lisle is forced to go on a family mission, she sees this as the perfect chance for one last adventure—even if it is with the one man in the world she can't wrap around her finger. But really, she only wants to help . . .

Which is why Lisle and Olivia find themselves in a gloomy Scottish castle inhabited by spiteful ghosts and craven murderers . . . and a shocking secret: the greatest peril of all may be burning within their own stubborn hearts.

Slightly Disappointing  3 vote for Last Night
I have no real strong feelings either way on this book. It started off super funny then sort of fizzled when the sexual tension was cut short and replaced by a non-committal self-imposed internal conflict.

The book opens strongly with a few letters back and forth between the younger Olivia Carsington in England and Peregrine Dalmay, Earl of Lisle, who is in Egypt. Olivia's letter are true to the personality of the child we met back in Lord Perfect, full of exaggerations, Ideas and words underlined, bolded and italicized for GREATER emphasis. Lisle's more sedate letters also suit the deliberate voice of reason that had managed the wilder Olivia on their Noble Quest for pirate treasure in Bristol. I was chuckling at their interplay at the Dowager Countess of Hargate's birthday ball where Lisle was trapped between a sudden desire for the adult Olivia and his comfortable rapport with his old friend.

When Lisle's dramatic and overemotional parents demand he go to a family estate in Scotland to restore it, withholding his entire allowance unless he acquiesces, he's in a bind. He wants to return to Egypt to work alongside his scholar aunt, not freeze his rump off in Scotland. Luckily, and unluckily, for him, Olivia has an Idea. Before he knows what hit him, he's on his way to Scotland, and so is Olivia and two elderly and inappropriate chaperones.

And here's where the book started to lose me. I thought their desire was openly acknowledged far too early, deflating the sexual tension. They share passionate kisses before they even reach the castle and shag early and often. This left a rather flimsy reason as the impediment to their HEA so the ghost story could conclude first. Olivia couldn't accept Lisle's proposal because he's happiest in Egypt and she would only tie him to England. 1. That's sort of a false dilemma. Surely she could have gone to Egypt with him. 2. If that's the case, STOP HAVING SEX ALL THE TIME. Talk about being a tease. The conflict is basically self-inflicted until Olivia basically says, "Ghost story's resolved, I changed my mind, let's get married." Weak.

The rest of the book is comical in spots. The ribald old ladies were good for a chuckle or two and the recurring bagpipe gag did make me laugh a few times against my better judgement. I couldn't say I disliked the book in the least. It was a fun adventure with a cast of entertaining characters. I just felt that it could have been so much more of a book had she paced the sexual tension and romantic conflict differently.

Good But Not Great  4 vote for Last Night
Loretta Chase has been a great romance writer at times. She is at worst a good romance writer. I was hoping her finally writing about the romance between Olivia and Lisle, who were shown in an earlier book as children, would be one of her all time classics, like LORD OF THE SCOUNDRELS. This book does not have the high comedic moments of "Lord of the Scoundrels" though along with her usual toe curling romance. Also, a lot of the book's romance stems from Olivia having turned into a beautiful woman. She was not a beautiful child but she was a very intelligent and resourceful child. I could have done without this great beauty being such a big part of the book. Olivia was interesting enough on her own.

This then is the romance between Lord Lisle, lately of Egypt, where he has been working with his aunt and uncle by marriage so as to escape his overly emotional parents who live life as a daily soap opera of their own making. He has become a man of calm intelligence and reason in direct rebellion to their messy scenes. However, when they threaten to cut off his money for going back to Egypt, he is forced to rebuild a castle in Scotland for them with Olivia and two elderly ladies in attendance. This sets the stage for their falling in love instead of being just childhood friends.

The characters were wonderful  5 vote for Last Night
These characters amused me with their dialogue, their love for each other and their sizzling chemistry. How satisfying it was to read a romance about two people who knew each other since their early teens and understood each other so completely. Lisle reminded me a little of Tyberius in Dara Joy's "High Energy"..Truly enjoyable!

Not my favorite Loretta Chase  4 vote for Last Night
Loretta Chase has written some of my favorite romance novels, and I think she deserves her fantastic reputation. Last Night's Scandal is good - I don't think that Loretta Chase is capable of writing a bad novel - but it's probably my least favorite of her books. If I hadn't seen her name on the cover, I wouldn't have guessed that she wrote it.

But it might just be me. I've discovered that I really don't like romance novels where the characters fall in love before the book starts, and that's what we have here. The main characters of LAST NIGHT'S SCANDAL - Olivia and Lisle - were secondary characters in another novel of Chase's that I didn't particularly love (that's the worst thing I can say about her), LORD PERFECT. They were children in the earlier novel, and their youthful escapades sparked a relationship which blossomed into love before LAST NIGHT'S SCANDAL even starts.

So the conflict in LAST NIGHT'S SCANDAL is that Olivia and Lisle need to admit that they're meant for one another. Olivia loves Lisle too much to leg-shackle him; she thinks he belongs in Egypt, and she doesn't want to play second-fiddle to his archeological excavations. Lisle loves Olivia, but he's afraid that she's too fickle and chaotic to build a life with. He also can't imagine giving up his passion for archeology.

It's kind of obvious from that brief description that Lisle underestimates Olivia. While Olivia has been nursing this epic passion, cherishing every crumb that Lisle sends her way and doing what she can to smooth his path in England while he's off having fun in Egypt, Lisle hasn't been nearly as devoted. He spends a lot of the novel dismissing her thoughts and ideas, and kind of belittling her. It's clear that he's scared of his own feelings, and that she's been the only girl for him all along, but I was angry at him for a good chunk of the book.

If this kind of plot appeals to you - the kind where the whole novel concerns an established relationship - LAST NIGHT'S SCANDAL is a good read. Saying it's my least favorite Loretta Chase still leaves it head and shoulders above most other romance novels.

A Great Love Story  5 vote for Last Night
I love a romance where the hero and heroine were best friends as children, and that's the case of Lisle and Olivia. Lisle and Olivia meet as children, and even though they are separated when Lisle is sent off to Egypt, they continue their friendship through letters. At one point Lisle admits he's been staying away from home because of Olivia and the feelings he has for her. Lisle wants a quiet and ordered life because his parents are drama queens, and Olivia is a lot like his parents. He'll never have that quiet and ordered life with Olivia.

However, the heart wants what the heart wants and when he returns for a visit home he sees a grown up Olivia and he can't fight his feelings for her.

Olivia, for her part, has been engaged numerous times, to quickly call them off. Probably because none of them is Lisle.

One of the most romantic scenes in the book happens after they finally make love and Lisle pulls Olivia to him and holds her. You can just feel the love they feel for each other. Almost as if they were waiting their entire lives for that moment to happen and to finally be together.

Of course, that moment doesn't last, when Olivia tries to do the right thing and let Lisle go, feeling he loves Egypt more than he does her. However, it isn't long before both admit they don't want to live without each other. To quote Olivia, "They balance each other."

It's a great romantic read and definitely one I'll be reading again.

Before this, I had never read anything by Loretta Chase, but I look forward to reading more of her books in future.
